Bhagavadgītā à Copacabana S.I. : Littérature dévotionnelle traduite de la langue « indienne » au XVIe siècle

Résumé. — Cette étude s’intéresse aux débuts de la « philologie missionnaire » jésuite à la fin du XVI^e siècle, à travers, d’une part, pour les Indes orientales, les pre­mières références (à partir de 1559) à des manuscrits et aux contenus du texte hindou de la Bhagavadgītā, et, d’autre part, pour les Indes occidentales, à une prière miraculeusement révélée en langue indigène par la Vierge andine de Copacabana, dont la version latine par le poète et rhéteur jésuite Francesco Benci (1589) connut un certain succès au cours du XVII^e siècle, notamment traduite en polonais par le poète Stanisław Grochowski en 1611. L’ouvrage de ce dernier, Cudowne wiersze z indyjskiego języka (« Merveilleux vers de la langue indienne »), recueil de divers poèmes dévotionnels en plus de celui qui lui inspire son titre, a malencontreusement été parfois présenté comme une traduction ... de la Bhagavadgītā.

Abstract. — The paper “Bhagavadgītā in Copacabana S.I.: devotional literature translated from the ‘Indian’ language in the 16^th century” deals with the beginnings of Jesuit ‘missionary philology’ at the end of the 16^th century, through, on the one – East Indian – side, the first references (starting in 1559) to manuscripts and textual contents of the Hindu Bhagavadgītā, and, on the other – West Indian – side, to a prayer miraculously revealed in the indigenous language by the Andean Virgin of Copacabana, whose Latin translation by the Jesuit poet and rhetorician Francesco Benci (1589) enjoyed some success in the 17^th century, notably translated into Polish by the poet Stanisław Grochowski in 1611. The latter’s book, Cudowne wiersze z in­dyjskiego języka(“Wonderful Verses from the Indian Language”), a collection of various devotional poems in addition to the one which provides its title, was unfortu­nately sometimes presented as a translation ... of the Bhagavadgītā.
